IV. AESTHETIC RHINOPLASTY (NOSE JOB).

 

1.- Does nose surgery (rhinoplasty) leave any scars ?.

Answer: No apparent scars are left in the aesthetic rhinoplasty. This is because the surgery is done through the nostrils inside the nose so all the scars are left inside the nose. When the nose have very wide nasal ala the surgeon does a wedge resection to diminish the nostril’s diameter. In these special cases, there is an external incision, but as it is placed in the alar sulcus, the scar will be hidden and it will not be very visible.

2.- Will I be able to choose the nose I want ?

Answer: No. The projected nose will be the result of the study of each individual case. And in accordance to your face’s proportions in such a way that you may have the best nose for your face .

3.- Is the result immediate ?

Answer: No. Immediately after surgery you will see an edematous nose, then after the first 10 days and for the next 6 months, the nose will be lees and less edematous until it reaches the definitive form around 18 months after surgery.

4.- Will the surgery affect breathing ?

Answer: The operation may correct breathing problems when this a re present previous to surgery. Nevertheless , immediately after surgery , you will feel a nasal obstruction as if you had a very strong cold. This is due to the fact that the nose will present swelling outside as well as inside and the edematous mucosa will produce this uncomfortable sensation of being obstructed. This sensation will subside with time, approximately within the first 8 weeks.

5.- If I have rhinitis, will the surgery fix this situation too?

Answer: Experience shows that in some few cases this situation may be alleviated after surgery. But in general one may say that rhinoplasty will not cure rhinitis.

6.- What type of anesthesia is used for this surgery?

Answer: The surgery is done under general anesthesia.

7.- How long does the operation lasts?

Answer: The operation takes an average time of 2 hours.

8.- How long will the results of the operation last?

Answer: The operation renders definitive results, but one must understand that the nose will suffer the same changes that the rest of the body experiment with the pass of time.

9.- Are there any complications?

Answer: As medicine is not an exact science , yes there may be complications as in any other surgery. But the reason why there are so few is due to the thorough study of the patients conditions in such a way that the danger is the same as when you leave home, take a plain or drive a car.

10.- How long will I stay at the clinic?

Answer: The surgery is most usually done in an outpatient basis, but if you want you may stay for the first 24 hours after surgery.

11.- When are the dressings changed?

Answer: After surgery, the nose will be covered by a plaster that will last between 8 and 10 days and it will be removed at the office. Usually after surgery a packing will be left in both nostrils to prevent postoperative bleeding. This packing will be left in place for 24 to 48 hours after which they will be removed in the office.

12.- Will there be any bleeding after surgery?

Answer: As it was said in question 11 after surgery, you will have a packing that will prevent from excessive bleeding. Many times, the packing material will be saturated with the blood from the nose , and a colored liquid will ooze into a gauze , that has been left in front of the nose , and this gauze may be changed at will or necessity.

13.- How much will it hurt?

Answer: As the surgery is done under general anesthesia you won’t feel anything. When you wake up from surgery, you will feel a light pain that will be treated with common pain killers.

14.- In what position will I have to sleep ?

Answer: For the first 48 hours (2 days) I recommend my patients to sleep with two pillows so that the head will be elevated .

15.- When I will be able to take sun again?

Answer: You should wait for the first 6 weeks after surgery to expose yourself to the sun .
